This was my first day working at the elementary level. Specifically I worked at Brass Community Elementary school, in Kenosha, WI. Brass is a school with student population with many Hispanic and African American. Also, many of the students I would be working with are struggling or reluctant readers. I think that the time these students spend in the library is a way to help them learn skills that connect to their other academic work as well as to help them to find enjoyment in reading, or work with them to find materials and texts that are accessible to them as readers. Also a big part of the first day is talking to teachers and creating a schedule for their students to come in, as well as what expectations the teachers may have for their students during library time. It is quite necessary for teachers and librarians to communicate. Further, it is also interesting to see how different principles promote or influence the checkout policies. Some allow students to check books out to bring home and others only permit checkout to go as far as the classroom. I also worked with the Destiny system in order to facilitate checkout and check in, as well as re-shelved materials. I also discussed my ideas for lesson plans with my cooperating school librarian.
